Theaters

Theater plays an important role in Dominican arts and culture. The DR is said to be the first destination in the Americas to offer drama entertainment, a direct result of the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. The most prestigious theaters in the country include Eduardo Brito National Theater, with a capacity of 1,600–Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the Cibao Grand Theater. An annual theater festival is held in Santo Domingo—the heart of theater in the DR—but you can experience a play throughout the year at one of the many excellent facilities in the capital, and in Santiago, the second largest city in the DR.

Altos de Chavón Amphitheater
Designed like a Grecian amphitheater, this breathtaking 5,000-seat open-air facility hosts concerts and performances from major Dominican and international artists year-round. Seeing a concert here, under the stars, is a bucket list item.
La Romana
Anfiteatro La Puntilla
A stunning, outdoor Grecian amphitheater facing the Atlantic Ocean, flanked by the San Felipe Fort on one side, and a verdant La Puntilla park. Concerts and other artistic events are occasionally held here.

Casa de Teatro
One of Santo Domingo’s and the DR’s most respected cultural centers. This historic location hosts regular art and photo exhibits, as well as movies and live music. It’s a favorite hub of creatives, from poets to writers and actors.

Gran Teatro del Cibao
Located directly across from the city’s landmark monument and surrounded by a lush garden, the Gran Teatro del Cibao boasts three levels with large marble and mahogany halls. Year round, the prestigious theater hosts numerous national and international plays, dance performances, operas and concerts.

Palacio de Bellas Artes
Inaugurated in 1956, this regal looking neoclassical building stretches over an area of 13,000 square meters, and hosts numerous artistic events, from concerts to plays, and ballet performances, with halls seating up to 600 patrons.

Teatro Guloya
The independently run Teatro Guloya hosts various plays year-round for adults as well as children, including workshops, arts and crafts exhibits, and an annual theater festival.

Teatro Nacional Eduardo Brito
Surrounded with museums inside Plaza de la Cultura, and named after a famous Dominican opera singer, the theater hosts plays and musical performances—including operas and the National Symphony Orchestra—and award events.
