Plantation Trails

Tucked in the Dominican Republic’s fertile hills are vast agricultural plantations. Take a tour from Punta Cana to the hills of the La Altagracia province, where you will taste chocolate and learn about Dominican coffee from bean to cup. Similar opportunities exist in Samaná’s El Limón plantations. In Puerto Plata’s hills, women-run cacao plantations such as Chocal offer full-day immersion into the world of chocolate, from hiking amid cacao trees to processing chocolate into bars. In the southwest, fruit trees help produce marmalade from mango, passion fruit, and guava.

Traipse the countryside’s plantations, from coffee trails to cacao.

Based in Cabarete, this “organic, shade grown, hand-picked, fair trade” coffee provider takes you on a tour of multiple coffee farms approximately two hours away, where it sources its coffee beans. You’ll get to roast, grind, and brew your own cup.

The Café Monte Alto coffee factory offers a complete tour of the facility and its production of organic coffee. See their process from tree to cup, ending the journey with multiple tastings of fresh-brewed coffee at the onsite café.
Hop on Café Toral’s coffee trail, a comprehensive hour-long tour of this popular coffee plantation located in the mountains of Polo. Learn about the various stages of coffee production from tree to cup.
Cafeto Madre is another option for a coffee trail in the mountains of Polo. Local guides will take you hiking across multiple trails leading to the coffee plantation. You could also combine an excursion to the nearby cloud forest of Cachote while you’re there.
This small chocolate factory is a one-stop shop to learn all about Dominican cacao, from tree to bean, and make chocolate bars on site. It’s a half-day trip that takes you into the gorgeous hilly community of Palmar Grande for some spectacular views.

This locally run cooperative in Polo produces their own coffee on site; tour their small factory and process during the months of November through January.
Hike through cacao fields, learning about the history of chocolate and its production process from bean to bar, and head over to the chocolate hut where all the delicious tastings take place, with chocolate in its various forms and flavors.
