Hiking

Being the second largest territory in the Caribbean, and the most diverse in topography, means a plethora of hiking opportunities. Our national parks offer the perfect setting to start. Hike the Cotubanamá National Park, and hear the history of the Tainos as you pass along their caves. Explore Los Haitises National Park on land, a rarely visited part of this natural gem. For more challenge, Jarabacoa is home to the roof of the DR and of the Caribbean region: 3,087-meter (10,128-ft) high Pico Duarte. Overnight expeditions lead to the peak at sunrise. Constanza offers a surprising side of the country few get to see, with breathtaking hikes through Valle Nuevo’s protected pine tree forests. Puerto Plata and Cabarete’s hills also offer plenty of organized hiking opportunities, through national parks, private ranches, and small villages such as Tubagua.

Hiking knows no season, although summer rains can make trails muddier but more adventurous.

HIKING IN
Dominican Republic

Hike beaches to your heart’s content, walk through flora-filled rainforests, and climb to the summit of 3,087 meters (10,128 feet) high Pico Duarte.

Look out for manatees at the Marine Mammal Sanctuary, where a couple of hiking trails lead you towards a protected lagoon, home to the largest number of endangered herbivore West Indian Manatees in DR.
Montecristi
Tucked inside Scape Park, in the Cap Cana area, this “blue hole” cenote offers a refreshing swim in natural, cool spring waters. Surrounded in lush rainforest, Hoyo Azul sits at the foot of a 75-meter (246-foot) tall limestone cliff covered in vegetation.
Punta Cana
Just like its adjacent Armando Bermúdez National Park, yet less explored, this is one of DR’s first national parks and protected areas. Stretching across three provinces at 764 square kilometers (295 square miles), it provides an alternative entry point to Pico Duarte.
Jarabacoa
A charming coastal fishing village, La Ciénaga offers the opportunity to experience an artisan marmalade making workshop, using fresh fruits collected from the Sierra de Bahoruco, and hiking trips to surrounding caves and rivers.
Barahona
Head to this waterfront park, located a mere ten minutes from downtown Jarabacoa, where two of the area’s rivers merge and create mini pools amid the rocks.
Jarabacoa
Kayaking, fishing, hiking, boating, and bird watching through a tunnel of mangroves: these are a handful of activities to enjoy on the Laguna de Bávaro-home to reptiles and flora.
Punta Cana
One of multiple cenotes tucked inside Scape Park, Las Ondas sits in an ancient, underground cavern with just a sliver of sunlight, but magical fresh waters. A leisurely eco trail through a dry forest leads towards a steep, wooden staircase that descends into the cave.
Punta Cana
Los Haitises National Park is one of the crown jewels of the Dominican Republic’s national park system. Los Haitises attracts numerous visitors who come here by boat to see its magnificent series of high rock formations; also, it boasts extensive mangroves along its bay, dotted with keys and caves.
Samaná
One of the most famous hills in the country, it makes more than the imagination fly from its swings with views of the coast and the majestic Laguna Redonda. From that point, more than a thousand meters above sea level, paragliding flights, buggy excursions, four-wheel drives and hiking are also available. Other interesting mountains to visit are La Herradura and Los Machetes, where community members carry out organized excursions among crop fields, as well as rivers and streams such as Chavón, Nisibón, Yabón, Seibo, El Cedro, Maguá and Yeguada, the latter flowing into the Atlantic Ocean offering fishing boat and kayak trips.
Miches
Hike your way up or hop on the only cable car in the Caribbean to reach Mount Isabel de Torres, flanked by a giant statue of Christ the Redeemer–one of the province’s iconic landmarks–and standing 793 meters (2,600 feet) above Puerto Plata.
