DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – FEB. 11, 2015 – The 12th annual Master of the Ocean is scheduled to kick off Feb. 22 – 27 and the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism is delighted to announce that it will once again be a sponsor of the event. The well-known competition brings together international watersport athletes for five days of high-level competition and beachside celebrations in Cabarete.

Cabarete welcomes 12th annual Master of the Ocean

The unique event includes multiple disciplines of watersports and is one of the largest of its kind. With the collaboration of social, economic and ecological objectives, the event declares a Master of the Ocean or Team Master of the Ocean based on four categories – surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and Stand Up Paddle (SUP). Each division is then judged on wave riding, overall impression, radical aerials, style and fluency.

“Master of the Ocean promotes the country as a world-class watersports destination and provides international exposure for local athletes, boosting the local economy,” said Magaly Toribio, Marketing Advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. “We are proud to sponsor an event of this caliber and invite watersport enthusiasts to join in the fun and consider Cabarete for their next vacation.” Marcus Böhm, creator of the event, said, “It is a great honor to be part of a new global movement that reflects the world’s best waterwomen and watermen in a perfect playground that is the North Shore of the Dominican Republic. Cabarete and Encuentro offer a rare and wonderful combination of consistent trade winds and warm waters. This unique event will identify the athlete which best masters the ocean through surf, wind surf, kite surf and stand up paddle boarding while riding tropical waves: the one who masters the ocean riding and jumping waves will be the Master of the Ocean 2015.”

The event was conceived in 2002 by German waterman Marcus Böhm in an effort to provide locals the opportunity to compete at a professional level. This year’s event welcomes big wave competitor Francisco Porcella, well-known ambassadors Marcos Diaz and Sui Mai and anticipates participation of teams from Puerto Rico, Germany, Italy and Nordic countries, among others. Additional sponsors include Grupo CCN, Dakine, Productos Chef, Encargo Pak, Redbull and Millenium Hotel.
