Master of the Ocean competition challenges Cabarete’s adventurous nature

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – FEB. 23, 2016 – Known for its adventurous offerings, the golden shores of Dominican Republic’s northern province of Puerto Plata attract active travelers seeking to take advantage of its ideal watersport conditions year-round. This week, the area will once again be visited by a wave of international watersport athletes as it hosts the return of the Master of the Ocean (MOTO) competition along its exciting waterfront. The 14th annual watersport competition, considered the “Ironman of Watersports,” is set to take place February 23 – 28, 2016 in the town of Cabarete. This one-of-a-kind event brings worldwide attention to the north shore’s renowned watersport offerings available to both professional and amateur athletes and adventure seekers.

“Puerto Plata remains an unparalleled destination for adventure-seeking guests, especially for those with an interest in watersports,” said Magaly Toribio, Marketing Advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. “The area steadily attracts new travelers looking for a unique escape. Events like this competition continue to showcase the high quality of adventure travel opportunities here. We welcome this year’s competing athletes and spectators and look forward to sharing the north shore’s offerings with them once again.”

The Puerto Plata province is globally recognized as one of the most impressive destinations for sports and adventure. Its location in the north of Dominican Republic – an area boasting beautiful mountain ranges, crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, rich history and a local community that heavily supports eco-tourism – makes it the perfect destination for fitness-oriented travelers looking for an adrenaline rush. Outside of water sports, tourists have easy access to nature’s playground through hiking, canyoning, rappelling, cliff jumping and more in close proximity, with whitewater rafting and other mountain-oriented activities available in the proximities of Jarabacoa’s Cordillera Central Mountain Range.

Accommodations in the area are diverse. Offerings range from luxurious beachfront resorts and quaint boutique hotels to budget-oriented hostels with many offering their own unique fitness activities on-site, such as yoga, boxing, CrossFit, and even trapeze training.

The Master of the Ocean competition has helped highlight Puerto Plata as a high-ranking watersport and adventure destination, as well as showcase why its town of Cabarete is deserving of the title of Kiteboarding Capital of the World. Held on an annual basis on Cabarete’s coast, MOTO is the world’s most elite watersport competition, attended by both local and international professional watersport athletes and admirers. The five-day event includes a combination of kitesurf, surf, windsurf and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) disciplines conducted on Cabarete’s Atlantic waves.

“The wind and wave conditions in Puerto Plata are ideal year-round for a variety of watersports, and have been perfect for this competition since its inception,” said Marcus Böhm, the event’s founder. “Master of the Ocean has grown to be the most prestigious stage for watersport professionals and I couldn’t imagine a better place to host it.”

Puerto Plata, or “Silver Port,” is set against towering Mt. Isabel de Torres, which offers a splendid backdrop against which to explore the north coast’s wild waters and jungles. Puerto Plata’s 62-mile stretch of beach, picturesque landscapes, diverse activities, quaint streets and fresh seaside dining offer the best an active beach vacation has to offer – both on and off the water.
