The “Beat the Winter Blues” party – open to the public – will feature a live Merengue party and a heated tent in Yonge-Dundas Square
Toronto – January 9, 2017: Looking to lift your spirits on Blue Monday? Dominican Republic (DR), CBC and 40 Merengue dancers will heat up Yonge-Dundas Square with a live event on January 16. The “Beat the Winter Blues” party, designed to chase away winter in a flurry of music and dance, will feature dancers, virtual reality lenses, giant postcards, and a contest to win a trip to Punta Cana with a live giveaway at 1 p.m. ET.
The Beat the Winter Blues event, hosted by CBC Music’s own Julia Nesrallah and sponsored by Sunwing, will run from 12-1 p.m. and is free of charge to the public. To spread the goodwill even further, Co-op Taxi drivers across the GTA bearing Dominican Republic advertising will be playing Merengue music for customers, and offering $10 coupons toward a future taxi ride.
People who are unable to attend the Beat the Winter Blues party can enter a second draw for a trip to Punta Cana by visiting CBC.ca/BeatTheBlues until February 26, 2017.
In addition to the exciting live dance performances, visitors will be able to take photos of themselves in front of life-sized photographs and visualize their own tropical getaway through a virtual reality lens inside a heated tent. Outside, dancers will delight the crowds with authentic Merengue dancing, which was recognized by UNESCO on its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2016.
With so much to celebrate, Torontonians have every reason to say no to the cold, put on their dancing shoes and visit Yonge-Dundas Square next Monday, where the winter blues don’t stand a chance against the Dominican Republic, CBC, and the feisty spirit of the Canadian snowbird.
