Dominican Republic, January 17, 2017.- The Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, Francisco Javier García, received the Medal of Merit Tourism for his great contribution to this industry, the highest award granted by the Ibero-American Conference of Ministers and Entrepreneurs of Tourism (CIMET).

The presentation of the award was made at the inauguration of the XX Ibero-American Conference of Ministers and Entrepreneurs of Tourism, held here in Madrid, on the eve of the FITUR tourism fair.

The merit medal for the internationalization of Tourism that received García had the unanimous vote of the members of the organizing committee of the XX Ibero-American Conference of Ministers and Entrepreneurs of Tourism.

The Dominican Tourism Minister thanked the distinction and added that this award is nothing more than the recognition of the international community of the great work to promote the country, which received more than six million visitors in 2016.

“This medal I receive on behalf of the Dominican people, President Danilo Medina and my own, as recognition of the effort we make to keep tourism as the locomotive of the economy,” said the official.

García took the stage to highlight the virtues of the Dominican Republic, which have made it the leader of tourism in the Caribbean region.

“Tourism has become the lifeline of economies. It is a sector that generates thousands of jobs every year,” added García.

This new conference of CIMET was headed by the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, Taleb Rifai, who appreciated the contribution that tourism makes to the world economy.
