(NEW YORK, USA) – The Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, Francisco Javier García participated in the 2017 Hispanic American Press Congress, held at the UNESCO headquarters, with a special presentation entitled “Role of Tourism and achievements of the Sustainable Development objectives”.
Garcia sustained at the meeting that the tourism industry has maintained a constant growth over time, being one of the economic activities less vulnerable to the crises that cyclically occur in the world.
He also expressed that Dominican Republic is working to make sustainable tourism applicable to the country, since it is an economic activity that does not compete with any other, but when it grows, other areas do so as well.
In the XIII version of the International Press Congress, the official analyzed the benefits of tourism, which has become the lifeline of the world’s economies.
He highlighted the crucial role played by journalists and media in the tourism growth recorded in the country and the world, and that these should be empowered by the initiatives undertaken in tourism. “Because nobody loves what they do not know,” added García Fernández.
He added that due to the natural phenomena of Irma and María, confusion arose that the entire Caribbean had been shaken, so the decision was made to invite European journalists, especially from France, to visit the Dominican Republic and confirm that the tourist activity in the country had regained normality immediately.
The conference was attended by the journalism ethics professor, Javier Darío Restrepo, considered one of the best exponents of social communication, who valued the speech of the Tourism Minister.
Restrepo, a professor at Harvard, acknowledged the work done in the tourism sector of the Dominican Republic and said that the best contribution of journalists is to convey the truth of the facts. In his opinion the most transcendent of the tourist promotion is to show the affability of its people.
The MITUR delegation also included the general coordinator of the Tourism Promotion Program in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, the architect Maribel Villalona, who together with the ambassador to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Laura Faxas, and Omar Ramírez, presidential advisor on Climate Change, presented the conference called “Best Practices for the Development of Creative Economies and Regeneration of the Territory in Historic Centers”.
The presentation provided the opportunity to project the achievements of the Tourism Promotion Program in the Colonial City, a cooperation project between the Inter-American Development Bank and the Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, whose investment has been centralized in the recovery of cultural and historical aspects of the Colonial City, as well as the urban adaptation and the design of cultural proposals that impact on the positive movement of tourist attractions.
The XIII version of the International Press Congress was attended by Carlos García, Ambassador of El Salvador; Gabriel Kost, president of Cela International University; Carlos Montilla, ambassador; Amín Cruz, president of the Ibero-American Journalism Congress, among other personalities and journalists from several countries.
