(Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, November 20, 2018).- Karyna Font Bernard Núñez, Director of the Office of Tourism Promotion (OPT), accredited in Spain, concurrent in Portugal, received the diplomatic passport as the first tourism attaché, act carried out by the Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic (MITUR), Francisco Javier García, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs (MIREX), Miguel Vargas Maldonado.

This institutional agreement between MITUR and MIREX, signed on March 21, aims to contribute to the promotion and tourist attraction to the Dominican Republic, using the support of the resources of the Foreign Service of our country.

Minister Vargas stressed that initiatives like this one present an important advance to support the promotion of tourism from the field of competence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and recognized the great work done by Minister García in the promotion of the most visited destination in the Caribbean.

“This act reflects the desire of both institutions to achieve the synergy necessary to obtain benefits that go to the Dominican people,” Vargas said.

He explained that, with the official document, Font Bernard and other Tourism officials who will receive it later on will have “a status that allows the exercise of functions with all freedom and all scope.”

“It is the first time in the history of the country that the umbrella, that the protection coverage that the Diplomatic Corps has, is placed at the service of a public institution such as the Ministry of Tourism, which performs functions outside the Dominican Republic,” added García.

In order to coordinate the work to be carried out, an inter-institutional committee was created consisting of the Vice Ministry for Economic Affairs and International Cooperation, representing MIREX, and the Ministerial Cabinet Office, on behalf of the MITUR.

Additionally, as part of the implementation strategy of the agreement, strengthening workshops will be held to promote and attract tourist investment. The training will be directed by officials of the Foreign Service, so that they have tools, technical skills and information for the correct tourist promotion of the Dominican Republic.

This initiative is also envisioned to identify and boost the demand for tourism services and to collaborate and identify opportunities to promote and attract new tourism investments, in order to contribute to achieving the goal of receiving 10 million tourists established by President Danilo Medina.
