The Dominican Film Showcase to promote the diversity of Dominican cinema with free screenings in Ottawa-Gatineau and Montreal from May 28 to 31, 2019

Toronto – May 22, 2019: For the 1st time in Canada, the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in collaboration with the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism and the Dominican Film Commission Office (DGCINE), will host the 1st Dominican Film Showcase in Canada. From May 28 to 31, 2019, a selection of awarded Dominican films will be featured in Ottawa-Gatineau and in the city of Montreal to promote the diversity of Dominican cinema. The free screenings, open to the public, will give movie lovers and Spanish film-enthusiasts a chance to immerse themselves in Dominican Spanish-language films, with English subtitles. Genres include documentary, comedy and drama.

The Dominican Film Showcase starts in Ottawa-Gatineau at the UNAM-Canada from May 28-30 with a new screening every day at 6 p.m. The opening night, on May 28, will showcase the film Hay Un País En El Mundo, followed by the movie Colours on May 29 and Juanita on May 30. The screenings continues in Montreal at the Cinéma Impérial on May 31, with the screenings of both Hay Un País En El Mundo and Colours at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Juanita: The perfect combination of comedy and drama

Juanita is an illegal Dominican immigrant who falls in love with a lonely Spanish farmer named Mariano. When Juanita brings Mariano home to Santo Domingo for Christmas, Mariano will have to learn about a new country and new culture. Juanita is a combination of comedy and drama based on immigration, love and survival.

Hay Un País En El Mundo: A thought-provoking documentary

Hay Un País En El Mundo meaning “There is One country in the world” borrows its title from an emblematic poem by celebrated Dominican poet, Pedro Mir. The documentary highlights the Dominican Republic’s cultural identity and offers a vivid walk through the natural landscape of the country, describing its literature, culture, gastronomy and more, through music.

Colours: An inspiring drama

Colours is about a young Dominican artist from the countryside, who never signs her paintings and decides to pursue her art career despite poverty and the opposition of her father.

“This film event is the first coordinated by the official institutions of the Dominican Republic in Canada with the support of the Dominican Film Commission (DGCINE), the entity responsible for the film industry in the country. This event is very important to us since it is not a simple showcase, nor an isolated film event; rather, it intends to be the beginning of a series of similar showcases. The objective of this event is to promote the best of our cinema to Canadians, and above all introduce our Dominican filmmakers to the country that welcomes us,” said Pedro Vergés Ciman, the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic in Canada.

“Cinema allows us to gain a greater understanding of places that seem foreign by telling stories that are often universal in nature. We hope that the films chosen as a part of our first ever Dominican film showcase in Canada will provide new insights about a country that is so beloved by Canadians,” expressed Cosette Garcia, Director of the Dominican Republic Tourism Promotion Office in Montreal.
