Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, June 6, 2019 – In relation to the tragic events that have been reported over the last few days, the Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic (MITUR) offers its sincerest condolences to the families and friends of those affected, while at the same time it continues to work closely with the appropriate authorities to clarify these cases as quickly as possible.

In a press conference on Thursday, Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier García said that “in the last five years, the Dominican Republic has welcomed almost 30 million people, evidencing the large preference of visitors as well as the safety levels of the destination. This also demonstrates these cases are isolated and regrettable”. He added, “we ask the National Police to speed up as fast as possible the investigation into these cases.”

He said the investigations are not affecting tourism, with the country continuing to receive visitors as per normal from all over the world. The Dominican Republic “is a tranquil, peaceful destination and the safest in the region,” García said.

Minister García also stressed: “Be assured that the authorities are working hard to clarify these incidents.”

For the Dominican Republic, the Ministry of Tourism and the rest of the tourism industry, the wellbeing of visitors is a priority, and that is why efforts will continue in coordination with the appropriate authorities to maintain the levels of safety and tourist satisfaction in all destinations around the country.
