Montreal, QC – February 5, 2020: On Saturday, February 1, 2020, the Dominican Republic welcomed more than 650 people to attend the first-ever Bachata Master Class in Montreal. The popular event attracted a crowd of families, couples and friends. Led by Dominican Maestro Pipo Alcala and dominican dancer Alondra Alcala along with local dance schools, guests learned and performed the dance sequence at the Complexe Desjardins.
“Bachata is one of the most fun and easy Latin dances to learn and it was amazing to see people of all dance levels taking part,” said Cosette Garcia, Director of the Montreal Tourism Promotion Office for the Dominican Republic. “Last December the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced that the danceable music known as the “bachata” is an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Bachata is the second Dominican musical genre to be listed. Merengue was first in 2016. The incredible turn out is testament to the power of dance and we hope, to continue this yearly,” emphasized Garcia.
In addition to the exciting live dance performances, two lucky winners received an all-inclusive trip for two to Puerto Plata, along with other surprises, guests got a taste of La Vega Carnival, one of the most popular carnival in the Caribbean, with many stopping to take photos of the colourful costumes and “Diablo Cojuelos” brought in from the region specifically for this event.
