Ottawa, ON – February 20, 2020: Throughout the month of February, the Embassy of the Dominican Republic with the Cultural Heritage Foundation of the General Directorate of Customs and the collaboration of the Ministry of Tourism for the DR will present the ‘Modern and Contemporary Art in the Dominican Republic’ Art Exhibition for the 1st time. Opening February 21, 2020, this captivating exhibition features 30 paintings and mixed-media photos which reflect the Dominican’s dynamic culture, influenced by Iberian, African and West Indian heritages.
Featured at the exhibition will be the works of renowned Spanish artists Josep Gausachs and Eugenio Fernández Granell, among many others. Gausachs’ famous paintings such as “Tropical Marine”, a conventional Caribbean beach scene with green palm leaves in the foreground will be on display, along with other works of art such as “Figures” and “La Clef de L’Amour”. The artistic story told by this show will also echo North American styles and reveal the influence of early 20th-century Spain.
“In 2019, Canada and the Dominican Republic celebrated the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the Embassy in Canada continues to celebrate the relationship between the two countries with programmed activities such as the art exhibition,” expressed, The Ambassador of the Dominican Republic in Canada, The Honorable Pedro Vergés Cimán. ” It’s an honour to present this brilliant showcase of Dominican art to Canadians, as it represents the famous art collection of the General Directorate of Customs in the DR. The collection was also created with love and perseverance by the outstanding Dominican, Mr. Miguel Cocco, who brings together the best of Dominican art. The headquarters of our main customs building in Santo Domingo is a true museum, and is an example of how art can bring a sense of joy to visitors and pride for both the General Directorate of Customs and the Foundation who preserve the art and gradually enrich their collection with the acquisition of new pieces.”
“Art is an integral part of the Dominican culture and it reflects the many different influences that contribute to the country’s vibrant multicultural motif, to complement the exhibition, there will be engaging programs and activities to celebrate the Dominican Republic’s Independence Day, including a session to become a Dominican Republic Specialist for travel agents and media on March 2, 2020, at 5:30 PM,” said Cosette Garcia, Director of the Dominican Tourism Promotion Office in Montreal.
The exhibition will be on display from February 21, 2020 to March 4, 2020 and is free to the general public.
