Courses around the country received top honors in 2019 from Golf Magazine and IAGTO.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – March 13, 2020 – Dominican Republic is home to the Caribbean’s most stunning and exhilarating designer golf courses, and industry professionals, including USA Today who recently encouraged travelers to put Dominican Republic back on their short list detailing the country’s world-class golf, are taking notice. In Fall 2019 alone Dominican Republic received four recognitions from leading institutions including Golf Magazine and the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).

At the 20th annual IAGTO Golf Tourism awards, IAGTO’s 700 and counting world-wide golf tour operators recognized Dominican Republic for its excellence in the industry this year by honoring Punta Espada Golf Course in Cap Cana with the Golf Experience of the Year Award for the Caribbean.

Throughout the country, Dominican Republic is home to 26 top-tier golf courses, many of which are conveniently situated within or nearby internationally acclaimed resorts. In Golf Magazine’s 25 best resorts for general excellence list they highlighted Punta Espada Golf Course and Pete Dye’s iconic trio of courses in La Romana: Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore, and The Links, located within Casa de Campo. The organization also recognized Playa Grande Golf Club at Amanera with a spot on their list of the 25 most luxurious golf resorts.

In addition to those accolades, the country is also gearing up to once again host the PGA Tour when the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship returns to Punta Cana in March 2020, for the third edition.

Award-Winning Courses

In La Romana, the late Pete Dye’s holy trinity at Casa de Campo are a must-visit. Dye’s masterpiece courses include Dye Fore, set above the Chavón River with cliff-side holes dropping 300 feet into the valley; The Links, a course reminiscent of traditional British and Scottish links courses dotted with lagoons, wading birds and tall, dense greens; and Teeth of the Dog, consistently ranked among the best courses in the world with seven holes facing the Caribbean Sea. Golfers keep coming back to conquer Teeth of the Dog: Both a stunner and a challenge, with its tenacious Caribbean winds.

Head east of La Romana toward paradisiacal Punta Cana where you’ll discover ten world-class courses, including Punta Espada Golf Club, a perennial favorite on lists of the region’s best courses. The Jack Nicklaus-designed course has been named Golfweek Magazine’s top course in the Caribbean and Latin America for eight straight years, with eight holes alongside or overlooking the crystalline Caribbean Sea. The course is as beautiful as it is challenging, featuring one hole that requires a tee shot carry over a bay. Throughout your game, you’ll notice how the course accentuates the local natural beauty, including bluffs, beaches, lagoons and tropical foliage.

Along the north coast, golf aficionados won’t want to miss the Playa Grande Golf Course, which is the last course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and widely considered one of his best. The course located east of the Puerto Plata region in Cabrera, kisses the Atlantic shoreline, with 18 holes overlooking the ocean and 10 directly oceanside. The dramatic layout offers an awe-inspiring view with more than half of its holes playing along the edge of 100-foot sea cliffs, and golfers can refuel at three luxurious comfort stations with food, drinks and unforgettable ocean vistas.

Dominican Republic’s PGA Pedigree

In Dominican Republic, golf fans can get up close to the PGA action while indulging in a piece of Caribbean paradise. In 2020, Dominican Republic will again host the Dominican Republic PGA Tour. From March 23 to 29, Puntacana Resort & Club will host the third edition of the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship on the resort’s 18-hole course—a Tom Fazio creation that boasts six oceanfront holes set on rocky cliffs next to the Caribbean Sea.

Explore Inland Golf Destinations

Beyond the coasts, golfers flock throughout the country to experience firsthand the thrill of playing golf under the tropical sun. To the east of Santo Domingo in Juan Dolio is Guavaberry Golf & Country Club an excellent choice for an inland challenge. The Gary Player-designed course borders a nature reserve and features a 15-foot waterfall and coral rock formations that add dramatic visual interest at holes 9 and 18.

Tucked into the mild and mountainous center of the country, Jarabacoa Golf Club is the only course of its kind in Dominican Republic. Local legend says that Robert T. Jones helped design the course on a napkin, but regardless of its origin, the course offers a unique challenge with many changes in elevation. Another central region favorite is Bella Vista Golf Club in Bonao. Pro tip: be sure to pay attention to the 2^nd hole, as it is one of the most difficult par-3’s in the country.

Just north of Jarabacoa, golfers will find a lesser-known gem at the Pete Dye-designed Las Aromas Golf Club, a city course that boasts panoramic views of Santiago, the Cibao Valley and the Yaque del Norte River.
