The country’s largest freshwater lagoon, reaching 28 square kilometers (11 square miles), Laguna Rincón–or Laguna de Cabral–is home to a variety of flora and wildlife rich enough to make it a protected scientific reserve. Thriving in and around the lagoon and its surrounding subtropical forests and mangroves are fresh water turtles, iguanas, and more than 50 bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, herons, and Florida ducks.
