El Choco National Park offers a world of nature for hikes, mountain biking, swimming in fresh water lagoons, and cave exploration. Stretching 78 square kilometers (30 square miles), a handful of hiking trails take you through thick tropical forest along cacao and coffee trees, and into caves dating back millions of years.
Miles of dirt roads in the countryside, particularly along the old El Choco Road and inside the protected El Choco National Park make Cabarete the ideal mountain biking playground. Adventure outfitters such as Iguana Mama provide mountain bikes and protective gear, along with trained guides who lead riders onto one of the area’s and the park’s multiple jungle trails on varying endurance rides, including an intense 50-kilometer (31-mile) biking challenge. Mountain biking is good year-round, though June through October are ideal when dirt roads and paths are at their least occupied.
