Located just 30 km (19 miles) east of Santo Domingo, Boca Chica’s large bay is protected by a coral reef, and boasts crystal-clear turquoise waters lined with soft, white sand. The sea is mostly waist-deep throughout the bay, free of strong currents or sudden dips, making it the perfect spot for relatively shallow dives. Depths go from a minimum of eight meters (26 feet) to a maximum 35 meters (115 feet). The majority of marine species thriving on the island of Hispaniola can be found in Boca Chica’s waters, from hard and soft corals to sponges, octopuses, reef fish, crustaceans, starfish, seahorses, and sole fish. Two of the most popular dive spots include Coral Garden and El Letrero, both offering good visibility for underwater photography lovers, as well as healthy coral reefs that are home to batfish, nudibranchs, lobsters, toadfish, cat sharks, and huge colonies of jellyfish, among numerous other species.
